Tongue Ring Damage

Every mother dreams of buying her daughter that special piece of jewelry. Perhaps it’s a birthstone ring for Sweet Sixteen or a special necklace for her wedding day. I was unprepared for the moment my 18-year-old daughter, Sarah, arrived home sporting a new piece of jewelry she’d arranged for and purchased all by herself—a tongue ring.

What can a mother say except, “Ugh!”

Any possible parental persuasion against this decision—risk of infection, swelling, speech impediment, difficulty getting a job—were obviously a day late and a dollar short. Sarah bore with the swelling and what must have been intense discomfort, and we endured a week of silence from her, as speaking was too painful.

Once that initial period passed, we decided that as parents, we just had to “ride it out” and wait for the Good Sense Fairy to descend upon our Sarah.

But there was something else we didn’t see coming: the added danger of sports. Sarah plays forward for the varsity soccer team, and she’s aggressive and competitive. When the next inevitable hard collision and spill happened during practice, (just a few weeks after she began speaking again), she came up spitting out shards of her front teeth.

From within her own mouth, the tongue ring had knocked out the lower edges of both upper front teeth. It was a sickening sight.

We paid an emergency visit to Dr. Tom Hughes in Monument, a dentist who specializes in the overall health of teeth, including broken ones. Unfortunately, the bits of teeth were too small to reuse, but Dr. Hughes restored her teeth in two visits with porcelain veneers that look exactly like her own teeth prior to the accident.

Today’s techniques are so much better than when I was young. Kids who’d fractured their front teeth had fat caps and telltale black lines around their gums. No more. Today’s ceramics and adhesives make a good repair undetectable. Flawless, actually. The skill of the practitioner definitely plays a part, and we were delighted to be in the capable hands of Dr. Hughes.

While we’d certainly have preferred that this accident never happened, at least the outcome was as good as it could be.

Soon afterward, as stealthily as it had arrived, the tongue ring vanished.

Those Masculine Good Looks

Women love to improve their looks, and when they undergo any type of cosmetic procedure, they are likely to crow about it to friends and relatives.

Men, those strong, silent types, like to look good too, but few will own up to having undergone cosmetic procedures.

Here’s a little surprise.  According to the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic surgical procedures performed on American men jumped by over 40% since 2002.  Currently, men undergo 15% of eyelid surgeries, and 24% of nose jobs.  Why?

Some say the uptick correlates to vanity, which seems to affect both genders equally.  Others say the tight job market makes a youthful appearance mandatory, not optional.

But before you schedule that eyelift or nose job, do yourself a favor and look into the mirror.  Perhaps your most important enhancement opportunity is right under your nose, namely your smile.

Men especially show age and wear on their teeth.  Investing in your smile through cosmetic dentistry can light up the face and take years away in just one or two visits.

Some men are even becoming more open about their results.  The patient shown here was so satisfied with the cosmetic dentistry provided for him by Dr. Tom Hughes, that he agreed to share his before and after photos.  “It may sound like and overstatement,” he said, “but when I saw what a healthy smile did for my face, I vowed to get healthier all over.”

In other words, men are learning what women have known for years: a beautiful, healthy smile not only improves your appearance, but it also makes you feel more confident.  The improved self-image is likely to have other spillover effects, like a more proactive attitude toward your overall health.  Nothing could be more masculine.

The Incredible Disappearing Smile

I’d always had a fairly nice smile. My teeth were in proportion, and I’d had braces as a child. But something weird was happening to my midlife smile, just when I needed it most. I noticed the change when I was having publicity photos taken when I was embarking on a speaking tour following the publication of my first book. The photographer did a great job, but in the middle of my widest smile, my teeth were so dark it actually looked as if they’d almost disappeared!

It wasn’t just coffee stains. Something else was going on. My teeth had turned gray near the gum line and were mottled. I had the photos retouched, but I knew it was time to have my whole smile retouched! Confidence is a public speaker’s secret weapon, and mine was in need of rebuilding.

Years ago, I had gone to Dr. Tom Hughes while he was practicing in Los Angeles and teaching cosmetic dentistry at USC. I looked him up and found him in Monument, Colorado. (Lucky, those people of Monument, Colorado!)

I traveled from Washington State to have Dr. Hughes do this work because I knew I could trust the result. I wanted my smile back, but I didn’t want some exaggerated, ultra-white newscaster smile.

It was clear that bleaching my teeth would not accomplish the look I sought: the staining was inside the teeth. It took only two visits, but Dr. Hughes restored my smile. Using the latest in veneer and adhesive materials, taking his time and letting be an important partner in the deliberations, he was able to find a not-too-white color that goes with my age and complexion and looks 100% natural. Now when I smile, I have teeth again, and confidence to boot.

Next week, I travel to Denmark to give one of my talks. I’ll be taking a new smile and a new outlook to the conference!

People are Smiling at Me

I’ve never been happy with the appearance of my smile.  I didn’t have braces when I was a child, and I didn’t think there was an alternative to braces to straighten my crooked teeth.  A few years ago, a dentist even suggested I get braces now, but believe me; I’m beyond the age where braces are common in my social circles.  My husband recently recommended Dr. Tom Hughes when I expressed my lack of faith in my previous dentist.  As soon as I entered Dr. Hughes’ office, I knew something different was going on.  The walls were covered with large photographs of people with beautiful smiles.  My first thought was “It must be nice to be born with beautiful teeth!”  Then, I started leafing through the photos albums in his office…they were all before and after photos of Dr. Hughes’ patients.  Most of them certainly were not born with beautiful teeth, but the “after” photos…they were amazing!  Dr. Hughes responded to my desire for a beautiful smile by showing me how he could accomplish this change with the use of porcelain veneers in only two office visits!  I was shocked!

I never thought that cosmetic dentistry was something “regular people” did.  It’s a Hollywood thing, right?  I occasionally ran across ads in the phone book and elsewhere showing cosmetic dentistry, but without a personal reference and going to Dr. Hughes’ office, I would never have considered it.  I also never thought I’d find someone with the skills of Dr. Hughes in our little town of Monument.

Well, the results are truly miraculous.  The procedure was easy, painless, and very affordable.  My only regret is that I didn’t do this sooner.  I am so pleased with the appearance of my teeth, and I know I smile more!  I don’t go around announcing to people that I’ve had some cosmetic dentistry done, but I can tell that many people are noticing that something very nice has happened to my appearance.

I am a long-term resident of this community, and you may know me.  You may think that I just came back from a vacation or perhaps you just never noticed what an engaging smile I have.  But, I know now why PEOPLE ARE SMILING AT ME…for the first time in my life, I AM SMILING AT THEM!

Putting Dentistry Costs in Perspective

I was recently in the office of Dr. Tom Hughes here in Monument because a gold crown on a lower molar came off while I was eating.  He informed me that I had worn a hole in the chewing surface and the margins were showing early signs of decay.  It simply had “outlived its usefulness”.  When he told me the cost of replacement, I initially had “sticker shock”.

Dr. Hughes has been in practice for more than 30 years and has a sense of humor.  He placed a zip-lock bag full of old retired dentures and partial dentures in my lap and said, “It’s a lot better than the alternative”.   I immediately had a new perspective and suddenly felt privileged to be in his office and in an era of advanced dental care.   After a few moments of reflection, I remembered that the crown was placed more than 30 years ago… (I distinctly remember because I was teaching high school in Oklahoma when I fractured the tooth and had the gold crown placed).  It was difficult for me to complain about the longevity of service because I couldn’t think of anything or any service that I had purchased more than 30 years ago, used every day, and still had in my life.

I subsequently made an appointment to have the crown replaced.  I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the organization and efficiency of his office and staff.  The anesthetic was delivered without discomfort; the procedure was effortless and complete in thirty minutes.  Two weeks later I returned for the cementation of my new “tooth- colored” crown.  It fits, it’s comfortable and ready for decades of service.

Thanks to advanced dental care, I will never lose my teeth or my smile.  I’m convinced that modern dentistry is not expensive; it’s a bargain!

No Poking Required

While I was in the office of Dr. Tom Hughes here in Monument for my routine six-month exam and hygiene appointment, he noticed a suspicious area on one of my teeth.  Instead of aggressively poking the area on my tooth with a sharp instrument, he gently used a small laser to make a final evaluation of tooth density and possible decay.  It was impressive, painless and in a word; miraculous.

He further explained that this laser decay detection instrument (DIAGNODENT) is new to dentistry and can accurately detect tooth decay and tooth density on a scale from 1 to 100 (the higher the number the greater the amount of tooth decay).  The number that registered for my tooth was 37 and he explained that any number greater than 10-15 was reliable evidence to justify treatment.  Needless to say, I scheduled an appointment for the repair, and sure enough, tooth decay was present.  The laser diagnosis was reliable!

Although this new laser instrument cannot detect tooth decay between the teeth (x-rays are presently still necessary to reveal interproximal decay), he reported that the technology for interproximal decay detection with lasers is on the near horizon.

It was so nice to leave behind the old days of painful probing and poking with sharp instruments to identify areas of tooth decay.  Thank you, Dr. Hughes, for staying abreast with the latest dental technologies to diagnose tooth decay and help me preserve my natural teeth for my lifetime!  I’ll see you again in six months for my next laser dental exam.
