No More Black Fillings

For years my dentist continued to put “silver fillings” in my teeth whenever I had a cavity.   Over the years the fillings became numerous, turned black and showed every time I talked or smiled.  I wanted my teeth to be white and beautiful again, so when I mentioned my concerns to one of my close friends, she immediately referred me to Dr. Tom Hughes here in Monument.  Later that week, I called and made an appointment with Dr. Hughes to discuss the sensitivity that I had to my dental appearance.

At my initial appointment, Dr. Hughes was friendly, listened carefully and his exam was very thorough.  He was also patient with me and answered my numerous questions.  He showed me pictures from his photo books and explained that the “silver fillings” (called “Amalgam” in dental-talk) are really a 50:50 mixture of silver and mercury.  He further explained that modern dentistry and adhesive technologies have advanced to the point where dentists can now adhere materials directly to the teeth with tremendous success.  Furthermore, he explained that these new materials are non-toxic, long lasting, and closely match the shades of natural teeth.

I made three appointments in his office and had my unsightly “black fillings” replaced with the new tooth-colored filling materials.  His office is well organized, employs a very friendly staff, runs on time and the procedures are fast and without discomfort. Now my teeth are once again white and beautiful.  It’s so nice to know that no “black fillings” show when I laugh or talk…I haven’t enjoyed that level of confidence since I was eighteen. Thank you, Dr. Hughes, for staying current with your profession and for making available your advanced dental services to this community.

My Space

My grandfather had it, my father has it and I have it.

It’s a space between my two front teeth.  It’s a genetic condition, and I was told that nothing could be done to correct it.

For years my classmates in school made fun of the space between my two front teeth, but I just got used to the teasing and I learned to “get over it”.  Years ago, at my insistence, my mother took me to a dentist to correct my perceived disfigurement.  The only resolution the dentist could offer at that time was the placement of two full porcelain crowns on my two front teeth.  My wise mother would not permit such gross invasion of my healthy natural teeth to correct this “minor” esthetic problem, so we did nothing.

Fast-forward twenty years.  I am now a TV producer and “my space”, although acceptable for David Letterman and Lauren Hutton, was not working for me.  My peers still perceived it as “too country” for my job and me.

Coincidentally, in an effort to relieve my wife from some of her routine errands, I agreed to take my children to the office of Dr. Tom Hughes (here in Monument) for their routine dental check-ups.  While in his office, I took note of some before and after photos of his patients that had similar dental conditions; namely space between the two front teeth that he corrected with “bonding”.  Upon further inquiry, I had my questions answered and at a subsequent appointment “ my space” was quickly reduced to “no space”.  It was a simple, non-invasive procedure that took less than an hour and cost less than I expected.  Needless to say, I am very impressed with the results, and I highly recommend that you visit his office if have any dental concerns.

Dr. Hughes’ office “runs on-time” and we are privileged to have such a skilled dentist here in Monument.  Should you have any cosmetic, restorative or preventive dental concerns for your or your entire family, I urge you to contact Dr. Hughes.

Once again, thank you, Dr. Hughes.  Finally, I am confident with my smile and the absence of “my space”.

“Grandpa, your teeth are black”

Kids say the darndest things, as Art Linkletter used to say. Sometimes they’re so painfully true that it gives you pause!

My wife and I were up in Fort Collins attending the fourth birthday party of our grandson, Kiefer. We played it up, putting on the silly hats and taking turns swiping at the piñata.  Kiefer sat on my lap while we ate our cake and ice cream, staring at me in that four-year-old way, and then he said, “Grandpa, when you open your mouth, the teeth in the front are white, but the teeth in the back are black.”

He was referring to the big, old “silver fillings” in my back teeth. I had been told that they would eventually need to be replaced, since they do wear out in time, so I did a little research and discovered that amalgam is a dental material made of a 50/50 mix of mercury and silver. I also discovered that the new composite filling materials, made of porcelain and resin, are white, and every bit as durable as the old amalgam—perhaps even more so.  As amalgam fillings age, they darken and stain your teeth gray, making your teeth “look black,” as Kiefer so innocently pointed out. A good look in the mirror made me realize that my back teeth do show when I laugh or talk, and black teeth aren’t flattering!

I later made an appointment with Dr. Tom Hughes here in Monument, as I had heard that he provided family dental care with great concern for the esthetic result.  Again, I did some research and discovered that getting the best results with these new composite filling materials requires that the dentist has a high degree of expertise. Experience matters, in other words. I felt confident when I found that Dr. Hughes has not only practiced advanced adhesion dental techniques for decades but that he’s taught them and has published numerous articles in dental journals regarding their use.

Dr. Hughes’ office is well run, with a friendly and efficient staff, minimal wait time, and lots of “before and after” pictures to help you understand the types of dental treatment possible today. Removing my old amalgams and replacing them with new porcelain-resin composite took a couple of visits, but I was completely comfortable and in very capable hands. I couldn’t be happier with my new fillings, which are solid, not sensitive to hot or cold foods…and white.  My new fillings should last until after Kiefer graduates from college.

We are very fortunate to have access to the very latest dental procedures through Dr. Hughes.

Dentistry is Like Tires and Brakes…It Wears Out

I was recently in the dental office of Dr. Tom Hughes here in Monument for my routine dental check-up and hygiene appointment.  Upon his examination, Dr. Hughes noticed that I had worn through the tongue side of the porcelain crowns on my upper two front teeth.  With an intra-oral camera, he was able to show me in detail the amount of wear that had occurred over the years.  How many years was it I thought, and then I remembered that the crowns had been placed on my teeth after I fractured them in a high school football game more than thirty years ago.

Thirty years is tremendous service for something that I use every day, but for some reason, I thought that crowns were supposed to last forever.  I knew that “nothing lasts forever” and even I could see the amount of wear, so I made an appointment to replace them.

Needless to say, the newer dental techniques are fast and the materials are incredible. When he placed my new porcelain crowns, I couldn’t believe how much better they looked and felt.  I then realized just how much I had accommodated to something in the middle of my face that over the years had worn and become quite unattractive.

I was then moved to put Dr. Hughes on the spot, so I asked him how long these new crowns would last.  Now, if you know Dr. Hughes, you also know that he loves cars and can always make an automotive analogy when it comes to dentistry.  His reply was very fast and honest:  he replied, “All of our restorative services in this office are guaranteed for five years, but remember, Dentistry is like tires and brakes…it wears out.”

Glued On Tooth Chips

Have you ever been on your way out to dinner with your spouse and gotten that dreaded phone call, “Your child is hurt”?  “Jonathan broke his two front teeth”, came our friend’s voice.

The heartache over this accident just wouldn’t go away.  We just kept hoping that it was all a bad dream and that our son’s front teeth would be perfect as soon as we awakened.  We even asked ourselves that famous question, “If we can go the moon, then why can’t we glue the pieces back on his teeth?”

When we called our dentist here in Monument, Dr. Tom Hughes, he told us to “keep the pieces of our son’s teeth in water and bring them with us to his office”.  A faint spark of hope touched our hearts.  Did he mean no disfiguring caps?  Could our dentist somehow miraculously “glue” the large chips back on his teeth?  Well, after two hours in Dr. Hughes’ dental office, our son had his own teeth bonded back together without any pain or discomfort.  They never looked so beautiful: this was truly a modern miracle!

We delight in telling you this story because there are so many new techniques in dentistry.  Just like in medicine, there are new cures and techniques discovered every day.  As it turned out, Dr. Hughes had performed this procedure before on other patients.   Nevertheless, he was very patient with us and explained every step (as well as seeing us on his day off).  In our hearts, we somehow knew that there must be a way; and indeed, there was:  we witnessed a miracle before our very eyes!  Thank you again, Dr. Hughes, for staying current with your profession and for providing for our son the wonders of modern dental care.   We shall not forget you!

All I want for Christmas…

When I was six years old, my two front teeth were missing for the holidays, and I can distinctively remember the childhood Christmas song  “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth”.  Although I considered my missing teeth quite a disfigurement, most of my peers had the same condition, so I dismissed it as a simple quality of “growing up”.

The years passed and my permanent teeth came in, but they came in crooked.  I dreamed of straight teeth and a beautiful smile, but being of a family of six children, I instinctively knew that braces to straighten my teeth were not an economic possibility for my parents.  In spite of it all, I developed a rather confident personality.  I learned to adapt to my crooked teeth, but secretly my smile always bothered me.

For twenty-five years of marriage, my husband and I always placed our children’s priorities first, but during those years he learned my most private and deepest secret; the “crooked appearance of my smile”.  Although it never bothered him, nevertheless, for Christmas this year he decided to give me the smile of my dreams.  He told me about his dentist, Dr. Tom Hughes here in Monument and what he thought might be possible based on the photographs that he had seen of Dr. Hughes’ patients.   Soon after, I made an appointment with Dr. Hughes to discuss my expectations and my options with the many new techniques now available with modern dentistry.  Now, thanks to the insistence of my husband and the skills of Dr. Hughes, I have the smile of my dreams.  It’s miraculous and it is indeed a dream come true.

With a tear of happiness in my eye and gratitude that I find hard to express, I just want to say…Thank you, Dr. Hughes, and Merry Christmas!
