Sealants are like raincoats for your teeth. When the cavity-causing bacteria are prevented from entering the cracks and fissures in healthy teeth, decay is prevented.
Placement of sealants is a technique-sensitive procedure that must be completed under ideal clinical conditions by a dentist and a well-trained dental assistant. Improperly placed sealants are worse than no sealants because decay-causing bacteria can inadvertently be sealed into the tooth cracks and fissures causing serious future problems.
Properly placed dental sealants can last upward of 30 years.
